NBA Draft Recap

In his second draft at the helm of the New York Knicks, Donnie Walsh addressed needs in the team’s front and backcourt. After being denied the opportunity to select crowd favorite Stephen Curry, Walsh went for the best big man available in Arizona’s PF Jordan Hill. Hill (6-10 / 235lbs) is a product player who averaged double figures in both scoring (18.3) and rebounding (11.0) as a junior for the Wildcats. Hill fills the need for a shot blocker (1.7 per contest) and gives the Knicks an active post player who can contribute on both ends of the floor....FULL ARTICLE

Formula 50
Yet another 50 loss season for the beleaguered New York Knicks, who find themselves thinking about ping pong balls instead of playoff towels for the 5th consecutive season. In grand fashion, the Knicks gave up a whopping 55 points to the league’s leading scorer in a disappointing 122-105 loss to the Miami Heat. Dwyane Wade - much like fellow MVP candidates LeBron James & Kobe Bryant - relishs playing against Mike D’Antoni’s YMCA brand of defense. D’Antoni is now one of only 10 coaches in league history to go from 50 wins to 50 losses in consecutive seasons. Ironically, the last to accomplish this dubious feat was Larry Brown in his lone season in New York.....FULL ARTICLE

Closing Cost
Shortly after Mike D’Antoni declared 40 wins as the goal for this season, talk of a playoff run became a hot topic. D’Antoni’s Knicks have already eclipsed Isiah Thomas’ win total for last season, but the question remains: can this team close down the stretch? There’s certainly enough talent in place to make a run for the 8th seed, but Saturday night’s loss in Miami was far too telling. Despite dominating their rivals through three quarters, an inadvertent elbow sparked a 4th quarter collapse that may go down as one of the most crushing this year....FULL ARTICLE

Mid Season Report 2-14-09

At the halfway point of the NBA season, the New York Knicks find themselves in 4th place in the Atlantic Division and 11th overall in the Eastern Conference. With a record of 21-31, Mike D'Antoni's team is far more competitive than last year's unit, but the team continues to struggle in several facets on the game. Offensively, D'Antoni's team is among the league leaders in points scored (105 ppg), due in part to their commitment to shooting the three-ball. At 29.3 attempts per contest, the Knicks led the NBA in shots from downtown. Unfortunately, they rank at or near the bottom in most defensive categories. Only Golden State and Sacramento allow more points to their opponents per ballgame. While the Knicks have been one of the more exciting teams to watch, their YMCA-like defensive effort continues to hold them back. In a season full of highs and lows, there's quite a bit to breakdown at the midpoint....FULL ARTICLE

Nate Robinson's return is just what the doctor ordered for a team desperate for depth in the backcourt. Robinson played a stellar game in Sacramento and appears to be fully recovered from the groin injury he sustained back on November 25th. Robinson got the start in Sacramento, but figures to return to his role as a sparkplug off the bench when Quentin Richardson returns from flu-like symptoms. Robinson - like David Lee - is up for a contract extension at season's end and the 4th year guard is coveted by several GMs across the league. Robinson is posting career highs in scoring (14.1), assists (4.1), steals (1.5) and minutes (29.1) per contest. If Donnie Walsh is committed to recruiting LeBron James, he may have to open the vault and re-sign Robinson as King James is a big fan of Lil Nate's game....FULL ARTICLE

Point Break

With the Starbury Saga reaching its closing act, news of the controversial point guard's indefinite suspension comes as no surprise. Donnie Walsh's decision to banish Stephon Marbury from the sidelines was a necessary move, albeit several weeks late. Reportedly, the two sides are $3MM apart from a settlement....FULL ARTICLE

In two stunning moves, Donnie Walsh made it clear that the Knicks intend to sacrifice this season and next for a superstar run in 20 months. Lebron James is the marquee name on a free agent list that include Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire. By shipping out leading scorers Jamal Crawford and Zach Randolph for Al Harrington, Tim Thomas & Cuttino Mobley, Walsh squashed the budding optimism that was building for Mike D'Antoni's team and replaced it with a vision of King James saving a basketball- starved city....FULL ARTICLE

News of Patrick Ewing Jr.'s release has The Garden faithful up in arms and wondering aloud about Donnie Walsh's personnel decisions. The Future Is Here, And It Pays In Euros

Basketball globalism is the new black and, for the most part, I'm quite pleased with that.  There's much more talent in the NBA than there was fifteen years ago, and the rise of international basketball has played a big role in that.  Who would have imagined that a soft, teenage German would turn into a 7-foot Mitch Richmond?  Or that a miniature Frenchman would dominate the paint and beat out the greatest player of this generation (a Virgin Islander) for Finals MVP?  Fifteen years ago, who could have predicted that the NBA would feature a dominant 7'6" center who’s unstoppable in the post, comfortable from 20’, shoots almost 90% from the line, and speaks Chinese?  And these are just some of the top foreigners in Texas....FULL ARTICLE

Adventures In Free Agency

LeBron James and Chris Paul were superstars almost before they could grow chin hair. Receiving contract extensions for the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, was a given. Josh Smith, as I wrote on Monday, is a little...flighty, but it was still no-brainer to invest in him long-term. It's not usually such an easy decision. In the case of Smith and Dwight Howard, their physical gifts are so extraordinary, elite among NBA players, that, barring injury, it's hard to imagine them not progressing enough to warrant big salaries. But most prospects have to match their athletic gifts with considerable skill development to be worth star money. And most haven't proven their mettle by the time they reach free-agency and ask for it. Teams are left to decide whether to make long-term commitments, for as much as a 6th of their team salary, to players who have yet to earn it on the court. Teams have to predict who's going to make The Leap to stardom. Making the wrong decision can screw up a team for years, typically by vastly overpaying for a bust. Since most teams have itchy trigger fingers, getting burned by letting future stars walk, is much less common. These decisions would be a difficult for any company to make, much less the inane legions who manage NBA teams....FULL ARTICLE

Artest to Rockets: Hilarity, Championship to Follow

When the news broke that the Houston Rockets had acquired Ron Artest, I was ecstatic. I'm a huge Rockets fan, and acquiring Artest immediately makes them strong contenders. Summer League Game 1 Recap 7-14-08

One Pick, Several Options
Donnie Walsh take note: Danny Ainge has given you the blueprint to go from worst to first in one year. After losing out on a golden opportunity to draft Greg Oden thanks to the unlucky bounce of a few ping pong balls, Ainge parlayed his misfortune into a championship building block. Trading the 5th overall selection in the 2007 NBA Draft for perennial All-Star Ray Allen turned out to be a bank heist for the much-maligned GM. Rather than gamble on pairing Paul Pierce with rookie Jeff Green and facing 2-3 more years of rebuilding, Ainge secured the services of one of the league's premier shooters. He also dumped the salaries of Wally Szczerbiak & Delonte West while picking up an additional draft pick (# 35) that became Glen "Big Baby" Davis.
